"Midnight at the Oasis"

Title: Midnight at the Oasis
Fandom: Lost
Pairing: Sawyer/Juliet
Spoilers: Up to "La Fleur" to be on the safe side.
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing on their swing set.
Summary: She tries to be invisible, sinking into the chair as if its small frame could somehow swallow her by default.
A/N: Never mind first Lost fic, this is my first fic ever! I think Darlton has given us such a wonderful opportunity to explore the 3 years we didn't get to see, and lately something has been urging me to try. Title inspiration from the 1974 top 100 chart hit by Maria Muldaur. So much thanks goes to [info]ann_sgcfannot only for the beta but for gently nudging me to write for the first time in many many moons.

She sits as far in to the corner as she can get on one of the small wooden school chairs. Around her, people talk with loose tongues and sway with even looser hips. She has to hand it to the ‘70s, it sure as hell doesn’t hold back. The kids – no doubt responsible for the mass onslaught of paper flowers decorating the walls – run in and out of the town hall, boys in cow-boy hats, and girls in mismatched tie-dye. She tries to be invisible, sinking into the chair as if its small frame could somehow swallow her by default. She watches the sea of bell-bottoms, remembering how much she used to hate school dances, any dances really. Ever since Adam Myer had approached her during her high school Freshman Spring Fling and asked her to dance. He only did it to make Isobel Garner jealous, and mid-dance, as if on cue, Isobel had sauntered over and ushered him away from her with some magical feminine touch she could never hope to master. She’d been plucked out of obscurity and then, just as suddenly, dumped right back into it.

She stares at her hands, wringing them lightly while her foot taps evenly to a rhythm she’s only half listening to, one part of her idly wondering where someone had dug up a mirror ball and another pretending that she was comfortable right there where she was.

His shoes come into view, and she has a split second debate with herself over the meaning of foot size before inwardly warning herself that she was going to have to find something else to do the next time she moved other than visit the bar.

“You okay there Goldilocks?”

Without moving her head, she peaks up through her lashes. Head cocked and crooked grin, he gazes down at her.

“’Cause you look about six years old in that thing.”

She flushes, closing her eyes briefly before tilting her head up to present a stronger front.

"Say something wrong?" he drawls lazily.

She bites back a response. It wasn’t his fault she was a social doormat.

Somewhere across the room someone is attempting to out-sing The Hollies. She cringes and then giggles when several others join in, each on their own key, proclaiming just why all they need is the air that they breathe. She catches him smiling at her, and wipes her own from her face. It helps if she pretends to be mad at him.

"I – um – I’m not really good at dances."

"That so? I’d have pegged you for prom queen."

She snorts. "I was in the Science Club, James. Rachel was the sociable one in the family. I was the geek."

"Okay then Miss Science Club, wanna dance?" he holds out his hand, his waggling eyebrows causing her to grin shyly.

"Um –"

He takes her hand in his and pulls her up out of the chair before she can form the sentence. He figures that giving her time to think would be dangerous, and he’d already had just enough Dharma beer to know he’d come out the losing side of a debate.

"It’s been a long time since I last danced." She confesses, as he manoeuvres her through the throng of swaying hips.

He turns toward her, still holding her hand. "It’s easy, I got ya." He moves her arms around his neck and she tries to ignore the way her stomach flips when he places his hands gently on her waist. It's been a while since someone did that too. "Relax I ain’t gonna bite ya." She smiles widely and shuffles in a little closer.

Somewhere next to them a couple has taken their gyrating to a more serious level, and it leaves no illusions as to how their night will be ending.

His grin is cheeky. "Don’t worry. I ain’t gonna ask you to do that either. That’s next lesson."

She curses her fair complexion and seeks the only refuge she can by resting her forehead against his chest. He feels her laughing silently, and takes the opportunity to pull her in the rest of the way.

"See now we sway from side to side like so." And she laughs again, because she feels ridiculous, and embarrassed, and absurdly happy all at the same time. And he’s smiling broadly now because she’s laughing, and damn he's not sure why but he just knows he likes it when she does. They move in time to the music, her head coming to rest on his shoulder and his almost buried in her hair.

"And then what?" she asks, her voice muffled in his neck.

He tries to ignore the feel of her breath on his skin, and clears his throat before he replies.

"Well – that’s pretty much it."

She smiles and even though he can’t see her face he realises that somewhere in the last 5 months, since they’d conned their way into the Dharma Initiative, he’s managed to map and memorize that smile. She lifts her head to look at him,

"That’s all you’ve got?" she teases.

He smiles.

"It’s been a long time for me too."

Thank you very much!
I'm still trying to work up the courage to post it to the Suliet communities. It was nerve-wracking enough to just post it to my journal lol. Now that I've done my first I'm quite eager to write more.

YAY! I'm glad to see it posted! Yes I was impressed as well. I am sure I will be nudging you to continue writing fic, because you're good at it! :D I'm just starting Season 3 of Lost ...thanks to someone's Sawyer/Juliet video and now their fic! :p

Regarding your e-mail ... wow 108 days. I'm glad you told me that, because I am sure that would have been one of my questions.

*giggles* I have a VERY evil plot to convert people into Lost fans. I believe Sawyer and Juliet alone have the power to do just that :p

Heck I started watching Farscape through seeing a few fanvids and looking at artwork, fandom is powerful lol!

This was your first fic!? It's awesome!!
This is so utterly adorable - I love the image of science club!Juliet and Sawyer teaching her to dance. She's still just an awkward little kid inside. This was just perfect - happy and light, exactly what I was looking for today :) Thank you so much!
I hope you write more soon!

Aww thank you so very much! I'm in this utterly nervous place right now, I have no idea why I've had this urge to write, but I think I'm starting to feel glad that I did. It could quite possibly be the only way to make it through the hiatus!

Okay, I loved this. I REALLY REALLY loved this. First fic? You wouldn't know by reading. You've got a lovely skill set, a nice pacing and wording that paints a good picture. And your characterization is wonderful, I could see and hear it all. And its so sweet without being cheesy, exactly like the hundreds of moments I imagine them having! And this:

he realises that somewhere in the last 5 months, since they’d conned their way into the Dharma Initiative, he’s managed to map and memorize that smile.

Lovely. Good job. You must write more, the masses demand it!

Thank you! You're all seriously making me really happy right now, because I wasn't at all sure what I was doing at first, or if I could get it even remotely right, so thank you so much for reading and for commenting. I really appreciate it. Definitely inspires me to write more :-)

Okay. I don't want to sound demanding or anything but...You NEED to write more fic for these two...ASAP. *apologizes for demanding tone*

Seriously, THIS is brilliant. You nailed both characters and their dynamic perfectly. Not that I'm surprised 'cause I've already seen you do the same thing in your vid.

I loved the little tidbits about Juliet's life (Thank the GODS she finally met James, a man who puts her first. Don't know what all of those other idiots were thinking 'cause you're not gonna find a better woman than Juliet Burke). Anyhoo...

A truly lovely piece of SJ fluff. I love angst as much as the next person but it's SO nice to read something sweet with these two. They deserve more fluffy fics like this one. Care to fill the void?! *promises to stop demanding from here on out*

THIS is SO going into my 'memories'. Wonderful job, babe :D!

lolol. I must say your 'demanding' might just be a good thing. Quite possibly what I need to propell me into the next venture.

And heck I love me some angst too, but I think there's something to be said for spending some time dwelling in the land of Sawyer and Juliet fluffy-ness :D

Thank you so much for reading and for the awesome feedback, it definitely makes me excited to write again!

This is wonderful! The thought of the two of them dancing makes me giddy, and I love the description and dialogue you've used here - I could really see it happening. Juliet being shy and James leading is something I oculd really see the two of them doing too.

He tries to ignore the feel of her breath on his skin, and clears his throat before he replies.

This has to be my favourite line, I just adore the thought of James being affected by her like that ♥ Really great job, especially for your first fic ever - well done! I look forward to seeing more from you now ;)

Thanks! I'd actually just watched the season 3 ep "One of us" as I was trying to write this, and it struck me that Rachel seemed to be the more confident of the sisters, particularly when she was saying goodbye to Juliet. I could just imagine Rachel being the more outgoing kid, with Juliet bringing up the more nerdy side lol.

Well, if this isn't perfection, I don't know what is ~ congratulations on hitting one out of the park on your first at bat! Sawyer and Juliet were a fantasy of mine from the first promo shots I saw for S3 ~ I never thought it could happen, but it did, and I was beyond the moon over it.

Then...you know. :(

But let's focus on you and this ficlet and the very real need for you to DO MORE! Really. I don't run in the same circles as you do (judging from the user id's of those who have already sung your praises), but I'm going to rec this in my journal 'cause my Lost friends need to read it ~ Sawyer and Juliet just as right as rain; a lovely glimpse into the slow-motion development of a real true love...

*sighs*

Also look to be nominated for Outstanding First Fic at [info]lost_fic_awards, cause...hello?...that's exactly what you've given us.

Favorite bit among lots of favorite bits...

I see you have been nibbled at by another bunny or two? *crosses fingers and feeds bunnies* I'll be waiting right here to welcome them with open arms...
